Admissions Overview

St. Martinus University - Faculty of Medicine (SMUFOM) has a specifically designed US-based Curriculum for students wishing to pursue their medical profession in the United States and Canada. In selecting applicants for admission, SMUFOM will scrutinize applicant's motivation, intellect, and other character traits essential to becoming a physician. Consideration will also be given to special features of background and experience which may contribute to a candidate's potential success in the medical field.

Our Admissions committee will compile all of the required documentation and information gathered during the admissions process. Once all the information has been received, the Admissions Department will schedule an interview with the prospective student.The candidate will then receive a final decision from St. Martinus University, Faculty of Medicine.

Program Requirements for Admission

Admissions are based on a holistic approach in regards to the following requirements, and not based solely on one criterion.Each applicant is evaluated individually. Exceptions can be made on a case by case basis by the Admission Committee. Strong consideration is given to applicants whose background is in the healthcare field.

  • High school cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (Competitive GPA = 3.0)
  • Must have completed 2 of the 3 science courses among Physics, Chemistry, and/or Biology

Documents Required for Admission
  1. Application Form

  2. Official Sealed Transcripts

    • High School (Pre-med students only)
    • University or College (Basic Science), if applicable
  3. MCAT Score (US & Canadian Students), if applicable

    • The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) is recommended for all applicants to the Faculty of Medicine. Though not required, a student who has sat for the MCAT examination should arrange for the testing agency to submit the official score report to the North American Administrative Service Office.
  4. Letters of Recommendation

    • Two (2) Letters of Recommendations (preferably from science professors)
  5. Submit Personal Statement

    • Let us know why you want to be a physician. What contributions do you plan on making in your community? Any information you feel pertinent that will assist the Committee in making an affirmative decision.
Documents Required for Immigration

As part of the Admissions Process, all students must ensure their ability to provide the documents required by The Government of Curaçao for the processing of the student's Immigration papers. Immigration requirements may vary from student to student depending on country of citizenship.

One of our Immigration Officer will guide you on the immigration process after your admission application has been accepted and approved by the Admissions Department.

  1. Current Valid Passport

    • Copy of ALL pages cover-to-cover (in color)
    • Passport must be valid for 2 years
  2. Birth Certificate *Apostilled*

    • MUST be obtained within last ONE (1) month.
  3. Proof of Funds

    • Bank Statements proving funds of $8,000 USD or more.
  4. Affidavit of Financial Support

    • If a student’s tuition, housing, and living expenses will be sponsored by a parent or guardian they must provide an Affidavit of Financial Sponsor. This letter should state that all expenses related to the student’s education at SMU will be covered by the Sponsor.
    • Proof of Funds (Bank Statements) from the Sponsor proving funds of $8,000 USD or more must be attached to the Affidavit.
  5. Police Clearance Certificate Apostilled

    • Obtained within the last ONE (1) month which clearly says that you do not have a criminal record
  6. Certificate of Good Health

    • A completed History and Physical Examination performed by a Physician with a PPD and HIV status, submitted on a form provided by the Office of Admissions. The signature must be an original, as well as copies of all laboratory analysis completed. All documentation must be mailed or hand carried to the Admissions office on the applicant being agreed to the medical school.
    • Obtained within the last ONE (1) month.
  7. Six (6) Photographs

    • Passport size (35x45mm or 1.4×1.8in.)
    • All photos must be signed on the back
  8. Round Trip Airline Ticket

    • Book a round trip airline ticket from country of origin. Copy of airline itinerary will suffice for initial application for visa.
Personal Interview

A personal interview (via telephone, Skype or in person, if possible) may be scheduled within 5 working days of receipt of all requested documentation and payment of the application fee. This interview is an opportunity for students to express themselves and offer insight to their application, while verifying the details they have offered to the Admissions Committee.

SMU Admission interviews are done in accordance with a standard questionnaire and evaluation template in order to ensure an equitable interview process for all applicants. We will make every effort to schedule the interview at a time that is convenient for you.

Seat Deposit

Due to selective admission and limited enrollment, we request that upon acceptance, students secure their placement by forwarding a $1,000 check. This amount is non-refundable and will be credited toward the student’s first semester tuition.

Course Exemption Policy

Student who have successfully completed courses in biomedical sciences that are equivalent to Basic Science courses offered during the medical curriculum may request a course exemption. All exemptions must be authorized by the Dean of Academics.

In order to qualify for an exemption, the student must submit the following documents:

A formal letter requesting the course exemption including the reasons why the student feels that the exemption should be granted.

  1. An official transcript listing the equivalent course and the grade received.
  2. A copy of the syllabus of the previously passed course.
  3. A letter submitted by the Faculty member approving the course exemption.

If the decision is made to grant the exemption the student's transcript will list the grade for the exempted course as a Credit. Grades from exempted courses will not be included in the student's overall GPA calculation.
