Dr. Soria obtained her M.D. degree from Universidad de Ciencias Medicas de Centro America (UCIMED), in San Jose, Costa Rica, in 2004. She continued her clinical training by completing clerkships through Harvard Medical School Children's Hospital, Boston and Shriners Hospital, Boston, and at Tulane University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans. In 2007, she obtained her ECFMG certification after completing her Board Examinations. For the past four years, she and her husband have been living in Willemstad, Curacao, and greatly enjoy their life on this beautiful island.

Dr. Reddy graduated from Guntur Medical College, Guntur. Worked as medical officer in Trinidad and Tobago and Republic of Guyana. Obtained MD(Anatomy) from NRI Medical College, Mangalagiri. Actively involved in research work and presented scientific papers in various conferences. Scientific publication: Variations of the Sural Nerve in the Leg - A Fetal Study published in Indian Journal of Basic and Applied Medical Research. Dissertation topic: Morphometry of larynx and its cartilages in adult Indian cadavers.

Jose A. Mendoza, M.D., Ph.D.

Chair and Professor, Microbiology and Immunology

Dr. Mendoza obtained his medical degree from the Universidad de Los Andes in the city of Merida, Venezuela. He later obtained a Magister Scientiae degree in Immunology at the same university, where he subsequently served as a professor for more than 25 years. Between 2003 and 2007 he carried out doctoral studies at the Pasteur Institute and the Paris VII Denis Diderot University in Paris, France, where he had the opportunity to work on studies concerning the relationship between human papillomavirus infection and cancer. During his career as a professor he was chair of the Department of Microbiology of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Los Andes and head of the Microbiology and Public Health laboratory of the state of Merida, Venezuela. Dr. Mendoza is the author or co-author of more than 20 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and co-author of two books in the fields of Immunology and Virology.

Dr. Mohammed has Graduated from University of Khartoum, Faculty of Medicine in 2009. He finished his clinical internship in 2011 and worked as a medical officer in Soba University Hospital in department of Internal medicine, Nephrology and hemodialysis unit till 2013. From 2013 till 2015 in Grenada, he completed the International Teaching and Fellowship Program at St. George's University, Department of Pathology.

Anand Chaudhary earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University (TU) Nepal. He worked as a General Practitioner (Medical Officer) at Kathmandu Valley Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal, and served in the same capacity at Muli Regional Hospital in Maldives. Anand Chaudhary possesses strong expertise in the field of medical science, supported by over 3 years of clinical experience as evidenced by two published articles. He demonstrates outstanding problem-solving skills, administrative decision-making abilities, leadership qualities, and effective communication skills. His long-term goal is to pursue a career path encompassing clinical practice, academia, and medical research.

Hiba Mohamed earned her MBBS from Nile University in Khartoum, Sudan. She is a dedicated Assistant Professor of Physiology and a licensed General Physician, currently employed at St. Martinus University. With 2 years of experience in assisting medical education and clinical practice, She is passionate about research and continuous medical education. Hiba possesses efficient managerial and teaching skills.

Ferhan Saleem, M.D., Ph.D.


Associate professor, histology, pharmacology, and introduction to research.

Dr. Ferhan Saleem is a dedicated educator with over a decade of experience in the biological sciences, health sciences, and medical education from both an academic and clinical perspective. He holds a PhD in Experimental Medicine from the University of British Columbia, Canada where he conducted research on optimizing the implementation of adult domiciliary oxygen therapy in fibrotic interstitial lung disease. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the American University of Integrative Sciences. He is deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and stimulating learning environment that encourages critical thinking and lifelong learning for future healthcare professionals.

Pushpa Bhatt, MBBS, DDV, MPH

Dr. Bhatt received her medical degree from Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College of Kanpur University in India and M. P. H. from the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University, New York. She also holds a Diploma in Dermatology from Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Bhatt previously held positions with the World Health Organization and the several branches of the Government of Nepal where she conducted research on AIDS and carried out programs for limiting its spread. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her work, delivered presentations at conferences and symposia, and has published extensively.

Dr. Faiz Ahmad, Professor of Biology at Brandon University, Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, received a Master's degree from University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada in 1984 followed by a Ph.D. from the same University in 1988. He did his post-doctoral fellowship at University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, USA. Dr. Ahmad has written several book chapters, he has authored numerous research papers in research journals worldwide.

Dr. Ponte da Costa was born and raised in Curacao, but has different cultural backgrounds with Portuguese, Latin American and Dutch influences. The interest in Emergency medicine arose right after these experiences and he started his training in the south of Holland (Heerlen). He is the first Board certified Emergency physician form native origin that came back and started as the medical coordinator of the Emergency department in 2007. After his medical degree in Groningen, Netherlands, Dr. Ponte worked in several hospitals in Holland and Curacao at surgery, emergency and cardiothoracic surgery departments. He currently works in the Emergency medical management and involved in clinical emergency care at the St Elisabeth hospital Curacao. He also has teaching activities to nursing and medical staff. His main goals are reaching higher levels of emergency care to our local population, prevention plans, adequate trauma care and research on local level. Some volunteer work is being done providing medical prevention plans to schools and clubs around the island. Dr. Ponte has SEH arts KNMG (Board certified registration in Europe) and is also a member of the Dutch Emergency Physicians society.

Dr. Guillaume H. J. Suverkropp, MD, FACC, FCC, Hrs. Reg., serves as Managing Director of D.C. Cardiology Practice. Dr. Suverkropp serves as Chief Consultant of the Catharina Ziekenhuis in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Dr. Suverkropp began his career as a Cardiologist in 1983, specializing in Electrophysiology and Pacemaker devices. In 1993, he established a D.C. Cardiology Practice with a complete non-invasive cardiac laboratory in Curaçao.

Kare H Tang, BM, FRCP


Dr. Kare Tang trained in the United Kingdom and is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physician UK. He Graduated from Southampton Medical School in 1991 and subsequently completed his cardiology training on the Cambridge UK rotation. He has worked at the world renowned heart institutes including Papworth and the Hammersmith Hospital training interventional cardiology. He is also a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and trained at the Prince of Wales University Hospital in Hong Kong and is dual accredited in cardiology and general medicine. Dr. Tang is currently practicing at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre in the UK as an interventional cardiologist. His current interest and research includes coronary artery disease and chronic coronary occlusions.

Dr. Gluck attended medical school at Freie Universität in West Berlin, Germany. He is currently a Sylvester Professor in the Department of Medicine, Miller School of Medicine, at the University of Miami, and a Medical Oncologist at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami. Dr. Gluck was presented the “America’s Top Oncologists 2008? award from Consumers’ Research Council of America; he has also received the “Best Doctors in America” honor in 2005 and earned the prestigious title every year up to 2012. This special merit is earned on the basis of a nationwide survey of more than 1 million votes from his peers. Dr. Gluck held a special lecture entitled, “An Academic Career in Medicine from an International Perspective,” and is a visiting professor at SMUFOM.

Dr. Agarwal graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. His clinical training includes: residency at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, CT; Trauma and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Connecticut, Cardiothoracic Fellowship Training at the University of Wisconsin. He is currently Associate Professor of Surgery and Section Chief of Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, Burn and Surgical Critical Care at the University Of Wisconsin. Dr. Agarwal is board certified in General Surgery and Critical Care. His areas of expertise include: Trauma; Thoracic trauma; Traumatic brain injury; Abdominal trauma; Surgical critical care; General surgery; Upper GI (hepatobiliary, stomach, esophagus); Lower GI (colorectal, small bowel); Hernia surgery; Laparoscopic surgery; Emergent surgery (acute care surgery); Wound healing; Resuscitation.

Thomas Caven, M.D.


Dr. Caven graduated Summa Cum Laude from The University of Texas at Austin, B.A. Plan II Honors Program. He completed his medical education at UT Medical School at San Antonio where he was an A.O.A. graduate. His postgraduate training continued at John Peter Smith Hospital in Ft. Worth, Texas (affiliated with UT Southwestern), where he also served as the Chief Resident. In 1983, he began a private practice in Family Medicine in Austin and, in 1989, he joined Austin Diagnostic Clinic where he served on the Board of Directors. Dr. Caven was a founding member of Travis Physician Associates in 1994, helping develop it into a large primary care group which merged with a Seton based primary care group to form Seton Health Partners in 1998. Since 2001, he has also chaired the board of the Seton Medical Group, a 501a corporation, and is the physician member of the Seton Network Risk Assessment Committee, performing risk assessment and medicolegal analysis. Outside activities include the External Advisory Committee of the University of Texas’ School of Biomedical Engineering.

Dr. Vegt is a physician and chief of the clinical program at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Dordrecht, Netherlands. His expertise and innovative techniques in his lecture, entitled “Past, Present and Future in Bone Fracture Surgery” were presented to our students. Dr. Vegt has been a respected and knowledgeable professor in the Netherlands, and will return to SMUFOM for more lecture series.

Ronny Tan Paap, M.D.


Dr. Paap obtained her medical training at Medical Doctor University of Utrecht. She is a board certified Psychiatrist with certifications from Vereniging voor Nederlandse Vrouwelijke Artsen (Dutch Association of Female Doctors), Section V.I.P. (Women in Psychiatry),NVvP (Dutch Association of Psychiatry), and Section Quality in Psychiatry NVvP (Dutch Association of Psychiatry). She also obtained specialized training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry and Reporting, Pro Justitia and Training Systems in Organizations. Dr. Paap’s lecture, entitled “Isabella. Autism or Misjudgment of Somatics by Countertransference” helped our students take a first-hand look at a case study linking autism, Lyme disease, and narcolepsy from a psychiatric point of view. Dr. Paap will be returning every semester as visiting faculty.

Dr. Zahavi is a specialist at the Revalidatiecentrum Curaçao Rehabilitation Center whose expertise is focused on Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Zahavi lectured on the manifestation and diagnosis of common soft tissue disorders. Dr. Zahavihas been in love with academics and teaching and will be coming back for more lecture series.

Dr. Vegt is a Urologist at RijnlandZorggroep in the Netherlands. Dr. Vegt has numerous publications focused on the study of bladder cancers. During his presentation, he focused on the field of urological medicine and the many opportunities for focused research within the field. Dr. Vegt will be coming back to elaborate more insight into urological medicine.

Dr. Guillaume H. J. Suverkropp, MD, FACC, FCC, Hrs. Reg., serves as Managing Director of D.C. Cardiology Practice. Dr. Suverkropp serves as Chief Consultant of the Catharina Ziekenhuis in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Dr. Suverkropp began his career as a Cardiologist in 1983, specializing in Electrophysiology and Pacemaker devices. In 1993, he established a D.C. Cardiology Practice with a complete non-invasive cardiac laboratory in Curaçao.

Kare H Tang, BM, FRCP


Dr. Kare Tang trained in the United Kingdom and is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physician UK. He Graduated from Southampton Medical School in 1991 and subsequently completed his cardiology training on the Cambridge UK rotation. He has worked at the world renowned heart institutes including Papworth and the Hammersmith Hospital training interventional cardiology. He is also a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and trained at the Prince of Wales University Hospital in Hong Kong and is dual accredited in cardiology and general medicine. Dr. Tang is currently practicing at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre in the UK as an interventional cardiologist. His current interest and research includes coronary artery disease and chronic coronary occlusions.

Stefan Gluck, M.D., Ph.D.


Dr. Gluck attended medical school at Freie Universität in West Berlin, Germany. He is currently a Sylvester Professor in the Department of Medicine, Miller School of Medicine, at the University of Miami, and a Medical Oncologist at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami. Dr. Gluck was presented the “America’s Top Oncologists 2008? award from Consumers’ Research Council of America; he has also received the “Best Doctors in America” honor in 2005 and earned the prestigious title every year up to 2012. This special merit is earned on the basis of a nationwide survey of more than 1 million votes from his peers. Dr. Gluck held a special lecture entitled, “An Academic Career in Medicine from an International Perspective,” and is a visiting professor at SMUFOM.

Suresh Agarwal, M.D.


Dr. Agarwal graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. His clinical training includes: residency at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, CT; Trauma and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Connecticut, Cardiothoracic Fellowship Training at the University of Wisconsin. He is currently Associate Professor of Surgery and Section Chief of Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, Burn and Surgical Critical Care at the University Of Wisconsin. Dr. Agarwal is board certified in General Surgery and Critical Care. His areas of expertise include: Trauma; Thoracic trauma; Traumatic brain injury; Abdominal trauma; Surgical critical care; General surgery; Upper GI (hepatobiliary, stomach, esophagus); Lower GI (colorectal, small bowel); Hernia surgery; Laparoscopic surgery; Emergent surgery (acute care surgery); Wound healing; Resuscitation.

Thomas Caven, M.D.


Dr. Caven graduated Summa Cum Laude from The University of Texas at Austin, B.A. Plan II Honors Program. He completed his medical education at UT Medical School at San Antonio where he was an A.O.A. graduate. His postgraduate training continued at John Peter Smith Hospital in Ft. Worth, Texas (affiliated with UT Southwestern), where he also served as the Chief Resident. In 1983, he began a private practice in Family Medicine in Austin and, in 1989, he joined Austin Diagnostic Clinic where he served on the Board of Directors. Dr. Caven was a founding member of Travis Physician Associates in 1994, helping develop it into a large primary care group which merged with a Seton based primary care group to form Seton Health Partners in 1998. Since 2001, he has also chaired the board of the Seton Medical Group, a 501a corporation, and is the physician member of the Seton Network Risk Assessment Committee, performing risk assessment and medicolegal analysis. Outside activities include the External Advisory Committee of the University of Texas’ School of Biomedical Engineering.

Paul Vegt, M.D., Ph.D.


Dr. Vegt is a physician and chief of the clinical program at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Dordrecht, Netherlands. His expertise and innovative techniques in his lecture, entitled “Past, Present and Future in Bone Fracture Surgery” were presented to our students. Dr. Vegt has been a respected and knowledgeable professor in the Netherlands, and will return to SMUFOM for more lecture series.

Ronny Tan Paap, M.D.


Dr. Paap obtained her medical training at Medical Doctor University of Utrecht. She is a board certified Psychiatrist with certifications from Vereniging voor Nederlandse Vrouwelijke Artsen (Dutch Association of Female Doctors), Section V.I.P. (Women in Psychiatry),NVvP (Dutch Association of Psychiatry), and Section Quality in Psychiatry NVvP (Dutch Association of Psychiatry). She also obtained specialized training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry and Reporting, Pro Justitia and Training Systems in Organizations. Dr. Paap’s lecture, entitled “Isabella. Autism or Misjudgment of Somatics by Countertransference” helped our students take a first-hand look at a case study linking autism, Lyme disease, and narcolepsy from a psychiatric point of view. Dr. Paap will be returning every semester as visiting faculty.

Dr. Zahavi is a specialist at the Revalidatiecentrum Curaçao Rehabilitation Center whose expertise is focused on Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Zahavi lectured on the manifestation and diagnosis of common soft tissue disorders. Dr. Zahavihas been in love with academics and teaching and will be coming back for more lecture series.

Dr. Vegt is a Urologist at RijnlandZorggroep in the Netherlands. Dr. Vegt has numerous publications focused on the study of bladder cancers. During his presentation, he focused on the field of urological medicine and the many opportunities for focused research within the field. Dr. Vegt will be coming back to elaborate more insight into urological medicine.
